PhD students Amalia and Birte take you on an exciting tour into their everyday life as researchers at our institute. Different methods such as 2-Photon calcium imaging, patch-clamp electrophysiology, behavioral experiments or genetics enable them to find out details about the visual system not yet discovered. Amalia focusses especially on the neural circuitry underlying the detection of visual motion. Birte works on the neural circuits that help the flying fly to notice and land on a nearby surface. Such research projects are important pieces in unraveling the complex puzzle of the visual system of fruit flies which show astonishing similarities to our own vision.
